These ‘Horrible Histories’ books are how I learnt about history growing up.
Like many kids, I didn’t like (or see the point of) learning history in middle school.
Then my mum went and bought the Horrible Histories boxset and I could not put them down.
Horrible Histories is a series of illustrated history books published in the United Kingdom by Scholastic. They are designed to get children interested in history by concentrating on the unusual, gory, or unpleasant.
The books manage to spark and hold interest, making it the perfect series for middle school children aged 8+ who are starting to learn about world history at school.
The books are a mixture of facts, quizzes and stories with funny illustrations and cartoons sharing information about food, clothing, everyday life, rulers, wars, health, beliefs and entertainment.
The illustrations and humour are what encourage the kids to continue reading. The Horrible Histories will have your kids laughing out loud, cringing and saying ‘EWWWWWWW’. All whilst learning a wealth of information about the everyday life in different time periods.
This site has reviews of the individual books in the series
The books are available individually (you could pick just one that is relevant to their study at school) and also in various sized box sets from most online book retailers.
Visit the Horrible Histories website to explore their bookshop, games and online tv series!
